What to Bring to the Pickleball Court: A Complete Checklist
A checklist of what to bring to the pickleball court: paddle, balls, shoes, clothing, water and the small items that make your session easier.

The court is booked, your friends are in, and game time is getting close. But what exactly should you bring? The right kit makes the session more comfortable and saves you from hunting for a paddle or water bottle at the last minute. This checklist works for new and regular players alike, whether you are playing on an indoor, covered or outdoor court.
Contents
Paddles and balls
The paddle is the most important item, but you do not have to own one to start playing.
Check the court's policy first
Every court does things its own way. Some of our partner courts include paddles, some rent them, and some ask you to bring your own. When you send your date and time on WhatsApp, mention whether you need paddles so we can check with the host.
If you bring your own paddle
- Make sure the face is clean and not cracked.
- Check the grip. If it feels slippery, wrap it with a fresh overgrip.
- Use a paddle cover to protect it in your bag or a hot car.
Indoor and outdoor balls
Outdoor pickleballs are usually harder with smaller holes, built for rough surfaces and wind. Indoor balls are softer with larger holes. Bring two or three balls that suit the court type, because balls can crack or roll onto the next court.
The right shoes
Pickleball involves plenty of side-to-side movement, sudden halts and changes of direction. Running shoes are built for moving forward, so they offer less lateral support.
Choose court shoes
- Badminton shoes, tennis shoes or indoor court shoes give better side support.
- For indoor courts, choose non-marking soles. Some hosts require them.
- For outdoor courts, a harder-wearing sole suits rough surfaces.
Socks
Moisture-wicking sports socks help prevent blisters, especially in longer sessions.
Clothing and weather protection
Malaysian weather is hot and humid, so light clothing goes a long way.

For any court
- A light, quick-dry sports shirt.
- Shorts, a sports skirt or trousers that let you move.
- A change of shirt for after the game.
For outdoor courts
- A cap or visor to keep the sun's glare out of your eyes.
- Sunscreen for exposed skin.
- Sports sunglasses if you are sensitive to bright light.
If you are playing outdoors in the afternoon, keep a small umbrella or light rain jacket in your bag. Afternoon rain can arrive quickly.
Water and energy
Pickleball rallies look relaxed, but you will sweat more than you expect, especially in the heat.
- Bring a bottle big enough for the whole session. Sip during breaks between games.
- For longer sessions, an isotonic drink can help replace the salts you lose through sweat.
- A light snack such as a banana or cereal bar is handy for sessions of two hours or more.
Listen to your body
If you feel dizzy or overly tired, take a break in the shade. No game matters more than your safety.
Small extras that help
These small items rarely come to mind, but they are very useful when you need them.
- A small towel for sweat and your paddle grip.
- The booking confirmation from the host on WhatsApp, in case you need to show it.
- A sports bag that fits paddles, balls, shoes and a bottle.
- Plasters for minor blisters.
- A plastic bag for damp clothes and dirty shoes.
- Hair ties if you need them.
For groups
If you play as a group, split the load. One person brings spare balls, another brings water or ice. It saves space in everyone's bag.
New player or regular
What you bring also depends on how often you play.
If this is your first session
There is no need to rush into buying gear. Pick a court that includes or rents paddles, wear the sports shoes you already have, and bring water and a towel. After a few sessions you will know whether you prefer a lighter or heavier paddle, and that is when buying your own makes sense.
If you play every week
- Keep a dedicated pickleball bag packed and ready so nothing gets left behind.
- Change your overgrip when it starts to feel slick or worn.
- Replace balls that are cracked or out of shape, because their bounce is no longer consistent.
- Consider a pair of court shoes used only for playing, so the soles stay clean for indoor courts.
One useful habit: after every session, take out damp clothes and let your bag air out. Your paddle and shoes will last longer.
Wrapping up with a quick checklist
Before you leave home, run through this quick list: paddle or confirmed paddle rental, two or three balls, court shoes, light clothing and a change of shirt, a cap for outdoor courts, a water bottle, a towel and the host's confirmation message. With all that sorted, you can focus on the game.
