How to Plan a Group or Company Pickleball Session
Planning pickleball for friends, a club or colleagues? Here is how to size the group, count courts, choose a format and book your slots.

Pickleball works well for groups. The rules are quick to learn, doubles keeps everyone involved, and a single session can mix first-timers with regular players. Whether you are organising a game with old schoolmates, a neighbourhood club or a company sports day, a little planning makes the day run much more smoothly. This guide walks you through each step, from counting heads to booking the courts.

Decide what the session is for
Before picking a date, ask what the group actually wants from the session. The answer shapes how long you need the courts, which kind of court suits you and how play is organised.
A relaxed session with friends
If the main aim is to move and catch up, a loose format is enough. Players rotate in, partners change after every game, and nobody needs to track an overall score.
A company or team activity
For staff sessions, the goal is usually to bring people from different departments together. Mix players from different teams in each doubles pair. It works far better than letting each department play among themselves.
A small tournament
If the group wants a bit of a challenge, you can run a simple tournament with a fixture list. This format needs more court time and one organiser to record results.
Count players and courts
One pickleball court holds four players for doubles. In a group session, some players will be resting at the side while others play, and that is normal. Use this rough guide:
- 4 to 6 people: one court is enough. Resting players rotate in after each game.
- 8 to 12 people: two courts let more people play at once and cut waiting time.
- Larger groups: consider three or more courts, or split the group across two time slots.
For duration, many groups go for two hours. The first hour usually covers warming up and explaining the rules to newcomers, and the second hour is for livelier games.
A location that suits everyone
Choose a court close to most of your participants. RallyGo works with 26 partner courts across Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Kedah, Johor and Sarawak. A city-centre office team, for example, could look at pickleball courts in Kuala Lumpur, while a group down south could look around Johor Bahru.
Choose a game format
The right format keeps the session fair and fun for every level of player.
Open rotation
Players wait at the side and go on four at a time. When a game ends, those players come off and the next four go on. It is easy to manage and suits relaxed sessions.
Round robin
Each player partners someone different every round. A simple schedule on paper or a phone is all you need. This format is great for company events because everyone gets to play alongside many colleagues.
Short games
With a big group, play games to 7 or 9 points instead of the usual 11. Rounds move faster and nobody waits too long.
An intro block for beginners
If many participants have never played, set aside the first 15 to 20 minutes for the basics: the underhand serve, the two-bounce rule and the kitchen in front of the net. Ask the more experienced players to help out in the first few games.
Equipment and essentials
Sort out equipment early, especially for a large group.
Paddles and balls
Every court does things differently. Some courts include paddles, some rent them out, and some ask players to bring their own. Ask when you book so you know how many paddles you need to arrange. Bring a few spare balls too, since balls get lost or crack.
A quick checklist
- Flat-soled sports shoes suitable for the court
- A water bottle for each participant
- A small towel and a change of clothes
- A fixture list or pairing sheet
- A basic first-aid kit
How to book slots for a group
Group bookings through RallyGo work the same way as any booking. Send your date and time on WhatsApp, we check with the host, and the host confirms the slot. For groups, include these details so the check goes faster:
- Your preferred area or court
- The date, start time and length of the session
- How many courts you need
- Roughly how many players are coming
- Whether you need paddles provided
Rates differ by day, time and court type, so ask the host through us for current details. Booking rules also differ per host, including how much notice is needed to change or cancel a slot. If your headcount might shift, check those rules before you confirm. You can browse our partner courts on the courts board.
Book early
Weekday evenings and weekends tend to be in demand. If you need two or three courts at the same time, reach out a few days ahead so the host has time to check.
On the day
Arrive about 15 minutes early to check in with the host, hand out paddles and split players into groups. Appoint one organiser to manage rotation and time. Remind everyone of basic etiquette: wait for a rally to finish before walking behind a court, return stray balls politely to the next court, and clear the court on time for the next players.
Build in water breaks between games, especially on outdoor or covered courts during the hotter part of the day. Afterwards, grab a group photo at the net to remember the day.
Wrapping up
A group pickleball session is not hard to plan. Decide the purpose, count your courts, pick a format, sort the equipment and book early. The rest is time to play and enjoy it together.
